Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD Elements Desktop 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (Electronics)
I purchased the 1TB Elements (WDBAAU0010HBK-NESN) for use with a dish DVR 622.
The installation was really "plug and play". I simply pulled out of the box, plugged in, and it was immediately recognized by the DVR. Since then I have transferred about 200 GB of content to / from, and have watched the content directly from disk. Until now, it's working perfectly. Runs automatically after a few minutes of non use, as well as when the DVR is off. Also runs the backup automatically (less than 10 seconds) when you access the DVR.
One thing that some people might not like: the case is designed to sit flat (as pictured), not on your side. There are four small skid pads on bottom corners, but no one on either side. There is no indication on the packaging, documentation, or on the website of Western Digital if the unit is operating correctly on the board. As a general rule, the WD drives are designed to run sideways or even upside down (any X, Y, Z direction), so this will probably be too much - but you need to provide your non-skid pad.
Similar to other Western Digital drives, as the last model in the series "My Book", now a CD-based firmware partition that is difficult to remove, and may cause compatibility problems with some devices. That partition contains the backup software and utilities that are of questionable value in any case, and absolutely no value when using the unit with a non-computer device (like the Dish DVR). Elements - at least at the time of this review - does not include any of that garbage. (Note:. WD has a downloadable utility to remove the partition from other units, but if you do not want junk, then save time / trouble and just buy the disc Elements) Read more...
